Joshua Pickar

Assistant Federal Public Defender

A University of Chicago law school graduate, Josh joined the Indiana Federal Community Defender’s Office in 2022. Josh is also a Rhodes Scholar, where his Oxford dissertation explored the Eighth Amendment prohibition on cruel and unusual punishments through the lens of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. As a law student, Josh argued before the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit as a member of the United States Supreme Court and Appellate Advocacy Clinic. Committed to public service, Josh worked with the ACLU and the MacArthur Justice Center while a student at Oxford. Following law school, Josh worked as an associate with Debevoise & Plimpton in New York. In this role, he worked as a member of the commercial litigation practice group, but split his time between commercial litigation for the firm and taking part in the firm’s pro bono representation on two post-conviction death penalty proceedings with the Equal Justice Initiative in Alabama.

At the IFCD, Josh works on teams to investigate and litigate the claims of capital clients.

Working remotely from his home in New York, free time will find Josh performing standup comedy in clubs around the city, or studying foreign languages. He has varying levels of proficiency in French, Spanish, Russian, German, Italian, and Mandarin.
