Overview of the Divisions of the District Court for the Southern District of Indiana

The Federal District Court for the Southern District of Indiana contains courthouses in Indianapolis, Terre Haute, New Albany, and Evansville. Your case will be heard in the courthouse where the charges were filed.

What to expect when visiting a courthouse:

When you enter a federal courthouse you will pass through a screening station. You should leave home in time to allow for a short delay in order to pass through the security screening.

The court security officers will check the contents of your purse, briefcase, or other parcels by passing them through an x-ray machine. You will have to walk through a metal detector similar to those used in airports.

Prohibited items: You cannot bring a weapon of any sort into the courthouse, this obviously includes firearms and knives. Audio and visual equipment are also prohibited as are beverages of any kind. There is no place to store such items at the courthouse. Cell phones are allowed in the courthouse, but please turn your cellphone off upon entering the courtroom. Placing your phone on vibrate mode is not adequate!

You must bring a photo ID: You will be required to show a valid government issued photo ID, such as driver’s license or ID card. You or your family members will not be allowed to enter without showing your ID.

Family, Friends & Children: We strongly encourage your family and friends to attend and support you at your scheduled court appearances. However, if you have small children, please be aware that these are formal proceedings and it might be difficult for little ones to sit through an extended hearing.
